This is a female-only retreat.
FINAL BOOKING DEADLINE IS 23:59 on 19 Aug 2026. Here’s a countdown…
Are you writing about a historical woman or event, or do you want to incorporate historical details into your writing, whether in fiction, non-fiction, or other genres? In this three-day residential writing retreat, we’ll encounter fresh approaches to researching and writing about past lives, eras and changes. We’ll experiment with different ways of incorporating historical details, whether with an eye to authenticity or pastiche, and we’ll explore structural issues concerned with representing cultural and political shifts in the past. We’ll explore the particular challenges of writing about women’s lives, and try out ways of negotiating those challenges.
All my writing workshops and retreats are suitable for anyone with an interest in writing, from beginners to published authors.
A writing workshop or retreat is *your time*. All the exercises I offer are optional, and you can take them at your own pace. If one particular workshop or exercise sparks your creativity and you’d prefer to spend more time on it instead of moving on with the group, then feel free! Nothing on the programme is compulsory, and you can take a break at any time. I will be guiding the workshops as someone who has been a professional writer and teacher for over twenty years, but we’re all different people, with different ways of working, different focuses, different projects, different intentions, different methods, so nothing I say will be an “instruction” or “how writing should be”. Take the workshops in the directions that are most fulfilling *for you*. It’s your time; your workshop; your writing.
I am a writer of creative non-fiction, and many of my example texts will be taken from creative non-fictional genres. However, the majority of the workshops and exercises will be relevant to writers of all genres, from poetry to screenwriting. You’ll be very welcome, whatever you’re writing.
I (Rachel Hewitt) am a best-selling, award-winning author of four non-fiction books: Map of a Nation, which traced the history of Britain’s national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey; A Revolution of Feeling, which explored contemporary attitudes to emotion and traced them back to political revolutions over two hundred years ago; In Her Nature, which shines a light on women’s experiences of outdoor adventure from the nineteenth century to the present; and The Last Bastion, a history of women in sport from 1984 to 2024. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and I have taught creative-writing workshops and masterclasses for well over a decade, at the Universities of Oxford and Newcastle, and under my own name. I love teaching and know that it makes me a better writer, so I’m excited about working with you. You can read more about me by clicking here.
These are the titles of sessions I’ve given in the past. They are intended to provide a flavour of how I teach, but the actual sessions that comprise the one-day workshop will likely differ.

The Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate is a grand and iconic Victorian retreat. As its website says: “Famous for its glass-ceilinged Wedgwood Restaurant and the cosy Swan Lounge with views of the lawn, this elegant hotel has been inspiring stories for nearly 200 years and even played a part in Agatha Christie’s real-life mystery when she famously disappeared here in 1926.” The hotel is ideally located close to Harrogate’s town centre, as well as its Turkish Baths, RHS Harlow Carr Gardens and Betty’s Tea Rooms. It’s also close to beautiful countryside, and many of my retreats incorporate group walks and even trail-runs.
All rooms for the retreat are single occupancy, with private en-suite bathrooms and writing desks in each room.
The price includes 2 two-course buffet lunches; 2 three-course dinners; 2 breakfasts; 3 morning refreshments; and 2 afternoon teas. You will be amply fed! Guests will be responsible for purchasing any alcohol or soft drinks they require.
The venue is largely accessible, though there are some limitations (see below).
All of the spaces for the retreat, as well as the restaurant and bar, are on the ground floor, which has fully level access. There is a lift in reception with no steps. There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor.
Accessible bedrooms are available. All door handles, power sockets and door frames are of accessible measurements, and there are low height plugs in the bedrooms near the desks.
One vibrating pillow pad linked to the fire alarm system is available. There is no portable hearing loop system.
Guide dogs are very welcome.
Additional desk lamps can be provided for partially sighted guests.
There is external lighting for navigating around the property in the dark.
Please contact me if it would be helpful for you to receive workshop slides in advance of the retreat taking place. All components of the retreat are optional and you are welcome to leave any workshop any time, if you feel you need some space. The retreats are intensive, but I have been careful to build in time for outdoor activities such as hikes, to freshen and rest our minds.
